Automake generates Makefile.in files, intended for use with Autoconf.
Automake installs the following:
acinstall, aclocal, aclocal-1.6, automake, automake-1.6, compile, config.guess, config.sub, depcomp, elisp-comp, install-sh, mdate-sh, missing, mkinstalldirs, py-compile, ylwrap

Prepare Automake for compilation:
./configure --prefix=/usr |
Compile the package:
make |
This package has a test suite available which can perform a number of checks to ensure it built correctly. Should you choose to run it, the following command will do so:
make check |
Install the package:
make install |
And create a necessary symbolic link:
ln -s automake-1.7 /usr/share/automake |
